Turmoil

“Turmoil” is defined as “a state of great disturbance, confusion, and/or uncertainty.”

These are times of turmoil: 3D copying, ChatGPT, supply chain interruptions, asynchronous warfare, Covid aftermath, climate concerns, social justice demands, polarization, and on and on.

Of course in the 60s, when I was in high school and college, we had Woodstock, the Beatles, the moon landing, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Viet Nam, inner cities burning, and on and on.

I’ve coined the phrase No Normal® because I don’t think we ever “return to normal” (which means “average” or “typical”) nor is there a “new normal.” But what we face are new realties.

We need to prepare ourselves and our clients for the “no normal” ahead. Waiting for things to revert to some prior time is like waiting for Godot.

I hear this too often. When you find that you’re being “talked over” or shouted down, or simply ignored, stop the conversation. You’re being subjected to rude and offensive behavior, so don’t enable it by passively accepting it. It’s a form of bullying, actually. Simply interrupt: “I’m sorry, but I have to stop you here. You’re not allowing me to finish sentences and you’re disregarding my objections to certain positions you’re taking. Are you being deliberately rude or don’t you think my contribution is important? I’m not going to remain here if your behavior doesn’t change.” Confront the offensive behavior at the time, and cite specifics. If the person doesn’t change go to his boss or your buyer. If he is the boss or the buyer, walk away.

I can make the new product that’s ready into a successful launch, but how can I convince the client to delay it and revamp the entire system?”

One thing at a time, you remind me of the old story of someone who goes to an aggressive cosmetic surgeon to have a mole removed and winds up with a facelift that renders the person unrecognizable. Do what you’re currently being paid to do—get the new product effectively and successfully out the door. After that, suggest to the buyer that you couldn’t help but notice that the overall process could be simplified and made more cost-effective and propose a new product. Plumbers are smart: They fix a leak without trying to retile the shower, as well.
